Over 9 Million Test-Takers
The GEPT has received wide recognition since it was launched in 2000. As of 2023, over 9 million English learners, from students of all school levels to senior citizens, have taken the GEPT. This broad age range conforms to the LTTC’s aim of promoting lifelong English learning. At the Elementary and Intermediate levels, the majority of test-takers are students. The percentage of non-student test-takers increases at the High-Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Career Advancement
GEPT scores are highly dependable; for this reason, they are used by governmental and private organizations to evaluate personnel. For instance:
- The Central Personnel Administration of the Executive Yuan has adopted GEPT scores as a criterion for the promotion of civil servants;
- GEPT scores are used as evidence of language proficiency for those wishing to pursue a career in the civil service in diplomacy, aviation, or international affairs;
- The Ministry of Education refers to GEPT scores when selecting qualified students and teachers for government-sponsored study overseas and qualified teachers who wish to apply for English-teaching positions in schools;
- The GEPT is used by many private enterprises and government agencies, such as the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation, Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance, Taiwan External Trade Development Council, NXP Semiconductors, Eva Air, and Regent Taipei, to assess the English ability of their employees and job applicants.
Higher Education
An increasing number of colleges and universities now require their students to demonstrate their English proficiency by passing either the Intermediate or High-Intermediate level of the GEPT. This requirement indicates that the impact of the GEPT has extended beyond secondary education and produced positive washback on higher education.
- Over one hundred universities and colleges evaluate students’ proficiency with the GEPT. These academic institutions include public schools such as National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, as well as private schools such as Chung Yuan Christian University, Providence University, Tamkang University, and Tunghai University.
- National Taiwan University (NTU) has integrated the GEPT into its online and classroom curriculum design while aligning course objectives with the GEPT High-Intermediate level descriptors. NTU reports that this integration has led to easurable improvement in both teaching and learning. Students now have stronger motivation to learn English, clear guidelines to follow, and enhanced English ability. Meanwhile, teachers have more specific teaching goals in mind when planning their course outlines. In addition, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures now evaluates students’ English proficiency with the GEPT Advanced Level.
GEPT for Global Connection
The GEPT has achieved remarkable success in reaching out to international communities:
- The LTTC, in partnership with Academia Sinica, has administered the GEPT in Vietnam since 2007 for the recruitment of qualified Taiwan International Graduate Program applicants.
- Starting from 2014, the governments of Taiwan and Vietnam collaborate on a joint program, “VEST-500,” using the GEPT to screen and recruit elite Vietnamese teachers, professors, and civil servants to extend their study in Taiwan through scholarships.
- International programs offered by various universities in Taiwan, such as National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University, now recognize the GEPT as a reliable means of measuring applicants’ English language ability.
- The GEPT has been administered in China since 2010, in Malaysia since 2015 and in South Korea since 2017.
- Prestigious universities around the world now admit Taiwanese students to degree, exchange, or summer programs based on their GEPT scores.
To benefit more Taiwanese students in pursuing higher education overseas, the LTTC endeavors to expand the international recognition of the GEPT. Currently, over 70 universities around the world, including prestigious institutions in Hong Kong, Japan, France, Germany, the UK, and the U.S., have adopted the GEPT as a standard for measuring the English language ability of Taiwanese applicants.
